Boldly combining the power of dance and cinema, Mari tells the story of professional dancer and choreographer Charlotte (Bobbi Jene Smith), as she prepares for a new show. Uniquely using the poetic expression of dance to drive the narrative, we follow Charlotte as her world is turned upside down when she discovers she’s pregnant while her grandmother Mari comes to the end of her life.
Mari was commissioned through the Film London, BFI & BBC Films' Microwave scheme and premiered at the 62nd BFI London Film Festival was released in UK cinemas in 2019.

Hwyl Films was set up by producer Emma Duffy as a place for distinctive filmmakers to develop their voices and ideas into original films.
Emma's first feature Mari, written and directed by Georgia Parris, premiered at the BFI London Film Festival in 2018, and was released in UK cinemas in 2019.
As well as producing her own projects she has also acted as an executive producer on titles such as Phantom of the Open and Eternal Beauty by Craig Roberts, the multi-BAFTA nominated Rocks by Sarah Gavron, Wildfire, by Cathy Brady and Brides the upcoming film from Nadia Fall. Previously Emma has worked for the Wellcome Trust leading their drama slate, for the BFI heading up iFeatures 19/20 and for BBC Film as Head of Development as maternity cover where she worked across their slate.
Her next film Starve Acre, directed by Daniel Kokotajlo and starring Matt Smith and Morfydd Clarke and produced with House Productions will be released in cinemas this year.
She is currently developing new projects through Hwyl Films, including features with Georgia Parris and Naqqash Khalid.
